Welcome to Wota Wonderings! We are a group of english-speaking Japanese music bloggers brought together once a month to answer questions posed by johpan. We strive to be creative and entertaining, and we may even shed a bit of new light on interesting musical and cultural topics. Any questions about how we work should be directed to johpan. Don’t forget to check out the other posts from this month at the bottom of this post. Enjoy!

“I challenge you to find the best example of idol love.”

There is really no “best” way in how a person can showcase their love to a particular idol or idols. I may have the biggest photo collection of Captain or I can get my hair cut like Captain or even a step further than that, I may have the biggest erection for Captain once she gets on the dance floor, it’s all due to personal perspective.

I just have to look at the blogosphere and I can already name a few names which would probably faint if they breathed the same air as their idols. I mean, I probably am taking that a bit too far but the energy that diffuses from them when the name for their idol has been mentioned is more than apparent, even though it is via words; god forbid if they did that in real life.

While I’m scared shitless of people coming at my face going “MOOMOOKOOOOOOO <33333333333333333”, it shouldn’t be much of a rare sight if I ever did go to a Hello! Project concert or even a gathering of H!P fans. The sight and smell of sweaty men in their 20’s to god-knows-how-far-their-fan-base-goes-to would be an experience to say the least. I would want to experience it once or twice but then be over the whole “experience” for a lifetime.

Why?

It’s just seeing older men being as perverted (or perhaps otherwise) as you at a concert which features little girls doesn’t really go down well with me. I mean, it just wouldn’t seem right. It’s just like seeing Airi in those tight leather shorts while probably having the same thoughts as an older guy next to you is quite awkward or maybe watching Momoko pounding her hips to “Massara Blue Jeans” and not be having same ideas as the guy who is jumping next to the stage like Tigger in Winnie the Pooh. I could be totally wrong; the majority of the people who go to the concert only go see it for the music…

No.

Just no.

I couldn’t keep a straight face while writing that. But just maybe, the wota don’t have ideas of wanting to feel up the Buono! Girls while on the way to the concert and will come to only support the girls.

But, in all honesty, these insane wota who buy tickets to every single concert, are members of pretty much every H!P fan club, go to overseas trips with their idols, collect every goddamn little thing of their favourite girls, has their discography ordered from their debut to their latest deserves a lot admiration and credit but in the end, all they get is a weird glance.

These wota probably spend enormous amounts of money to do all these little things like buying the best merchandise but probably end up digging to the depths of their bank accounts just to pay the rent and food, something I couldn’t justify even if my dog started to whip me with its penis. I couldn’t begin to imagine trying to scrape money for the rent which is due on the day Chinami’s PB comes out while chomping on expired instant noodles.

But showcasing love for an idol does not mean JUST showering their agency with money. A nice essay of why you love this idol can more than justify your love for your idol. While it may not be as flamboyant as handing over money to the idol producers, it does provide a base to your fellow peers and other fellow lovers to understand your thoughts and produce collective reasons on why this idol is so loveable. Idol blogs like, Tsuugaku Vector, Last Forever, IlovemyMaimi… are pretty much blatant expressions of love to their loved idol. I mean, give them credit, they love their idol so much they tell the world about it and hope to share the love.

Whether it may be shouting their name at your top of your lungs at a concert, creating a worship blog, buying countless photos of them, getting a raging erection or even having wet patches in your pants, being active is the best part in showcasing your love of your idol. But being a closet lover/passive lover isn’t a bad thing either. You may love another idol but for other reasons except than the reason that most people point out and feel this certain attribute of that idol is precious to you and won’t “tell the world”.

One must understand that to showcase your love to your favourite idol holds no bounds and that there is no “best” way of doing it. I think once you start following the norm, then you’ll start to lose the fun of creating a “special” linkage between your favourite idol and yourself. I mean, I love Captain not just because of her awesome dancing talent but also that if she incorporated her talent in bed, she’ll be like a bull seeing red…it just not all sex, but she’s damn exotic and fiery when she gets her hips moving.

  • Ah, how would I react if I got that close to my idol? I've not really thought about it before and then again, I've never really felt the same way about any other person and or "celebrity"; it's all weird and new to me.

I’m a bit naive I guess, but I’d like to think of H!P gatherings, concerts or otherwise as just another way to show support. Which of course it is, but I see it without all of the perverted undertones. Delusional I know, as I’ve seen and heard what some people really think. But on the whole, if I could afford to, I think I’d enjoy partaking in such events on a regular basis. Maybe the actual experience would change my tune.

I completely agree that there is no best way to showcase your love. I personally wish that I could do more, buy more, write more, share more; but am fairly content, expressing myself however little, it’s the best I can do.

An interesting perspective. Thanks for sharing.
  • The colourful language never fails to amuse :D I commend you for your honesty and reintroducing me to the hardcore wota meets berryz video. I loved that one XD!
